Equine-Assisted EMDR
A specialized, evidence-based therapy designed for veterans and first responders, integrating traditional Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)—a gold-standard trauma treatment with the powerful, intuitive presence of horses.
Our three-part team—a licensed therapist, an equine specialist, and a therapy horse—works together to enhance EMDR. Horses act as living biofeedback, helping visitors safely process trauma and find emotional freedom.
EQUINE PARTNERS IN THE PROCESS
How the Horses Enhance EMDR
EMDR works by helping the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they no longer have an adverse reaction to a traumatic memory. In the EFF model, horses play several critical roles in this process.
As prey animals, horses are highly attuned to their environment. If a client becomes anxious or "checks out" while discussing a memory, the horse often reacts physically (shifting weight, pinning ears, or moving away). This can give the client immediate, non-judgmental feedback on their internal state.
Grounding & "Dual Awareness"
A key part of EMDR is "dual awareness"—staying connected to the safe present while revisiting a painful past. The physical presence of a 1,000-pound animal helps keep clients grounded in the "here and now," preventing them from being overwhelmed by the trauma.
The Courage to Heal
We offer a unique path to recovery tailored specifically for those whose service defines their lives. Our equine-assisted EMDR therapy creates a serene sanctuary for processing trauma and reclaiming peace.
For Veterans
Navigating life after service can be a complex journey. Our program offers a tranquil setting where veterans can process trauma at their own pace, supported by the steady, intuitive nature of our therapy horses. We understand the specific challenges of military transition and moral injury.
For First Responders
The daily weight of frontline service requires a distinct kind of resilience. Police officers, firefighters, and medical professionals find a safe haven here to decompress and process critical incident stress. EMDR combined with equine feedback provides rapid, effective relief for those always on call.
